Director Notes
Woman, creator, dancer, educator, choreographer, and improvisationalist are some of the ways I identify myself as an artist. Through my research and exploration of myself within a variety of job titles, I am finding a common denominator affecting my relationships with coworkers and those who are superior to my position.
The ability to state that I Identify myself as a Woman is something that comes with courage and confidence. This statement brings judgment or stereotypical conversation of what a Woman is or should be.
Through 23 years of womanhood, this is something I experiment with everyday; how to use my form of expression to change or impact the conversation.
A gift I found women have is maintaining strength, leadership, and balance in the most difficult circumstances. Women are UNDERESTIMATED, seen as weak or inadequate for all positions but are expected to raise and bear children with ease.
Similar to this concept, Dance is a deceptively complex sport. Dancers are required to have athleticism, stamina, grit, grace, fluidity, etc. but are intended to make performances look effortless.
Through my choreography, music, and production, I hope audiences are left with a new mindset on their daily lives. I hope when audiences encounter my work they will never second guess the strength of a woman or a dancer. -Abby Lamb
What is UNDERESTIMATED?
UNDERESTIMATED is a choreographed dance piece that encompasses the strength, power, diligence, and confidence of a woman. Throughout the production, stories of women adversity are depicted. These stories are reflective of the specific emotions felt when a woman or those around her face confrontation. The dancers represent this through athletic ability, movement, and emotion.
Oftentimes women are put into a specific stereotype and outline of what we should be or how we should act. This becomes isolating or lonely given the expectations. A 6 foot by 7 foot cube is used as a representation of isolation. Dancers dance inside, outside, and on the cube to represent the struggle of fitting in or breaking out of a stereotype.
With a stereotype women feel pressured to be exactly like other women. Someone who will dress and groom themselves in a specific manner; to wear makeup, have their hair done, and always look their best. This stereotype has been carried through generations and affects more than just a woman's mentality. This stereotype is seen in the workplace, on the street, or through social media.
Through personal experiences and conversations with others, women are treated in specific ways that create uncomfortable circumstances and difficulty in finding powerful positions.
This production is meant to inspire, celebrate, and reflect the lives of women. All audiences can find a connection and a way to empower future generations of women.
